The la Doua Science Park benefits from a very dense local industrial network drawing on competences in mechanics and heat transfer. The Rhône-Alpes region is the French leader in refrigeration (air conditioning, refrigeration for food storage...), as well as in mechanics, and the la Doua Science Park is an active partner in the performances and innovation of French and international companies with a large spectrum of activities including aerospace, aeronautics, transports, biomedicine or food processing.

Because company performances in terms of reliability and security of their products as well as comfort for users depend on research in mechanics and heat transfer these have long been looking towards the economic world. Every year, in heat transfer only, more than 500 industrial clients, most of them SME's ask for competences from the la Doua technopole.

Research :

La Doua researchers are involved in all areas of mechanics and heat transfer and benefit from unique test benches in France.

Wear, breakage, corrosion, aerodynamics, noise, vibrations ... :
Eight la Doua labs are involved in all research areas of mechanics. They promote numerous exchanges with other scientific fields of study.
Materials/Mechanics : la Doua labs have been selected by SNECMA as research pole on "roller bearing calculations" for this joint materials/mechanics field of study.
Transports : For four years, UCBL, INSA-Lyon, ECL, INRETS and Renault VI have participated in the "Security - Transports" programme sponsored by the Rhône-alpes region. The same teams are also heavily involved in research projects supported by GEC Alsthom on the design of new generation TGV's (high speed trains) with lighter structures using composites.
Biomechanics : Research on biomechanics are conducted and most particularly on the human skeleton. Research on human joints have led to the design of modelling tools for doctors.
Acoustics and vibrations : detection, control, noise quality... La Doua labs offer various competences (acoustics, mechanics, materials, signal processing, computer science...) to meet the needs of acoustics today.

European Institute of Tribology : The headquarters of the European Institute of Tribology are located on the la Doua Science Park. The Institute's researchers concentrate on wear, friction, and lubrication to improve the durability and performance of products. It gathers some of INSA-Lyon's la Doua-based labs, labs from Lyon's Ecole Centrale as well as two British partners : Leeds University and Imperial College, London.

Heat transfer and aeraulics :
CETHIL is one of France's major labs in heat transfer :
Together with CNRS, CETHIL gathers 70 INSA-Lyon and UCBL researchers. It focuses on various fields from heat transfer (electronic component cooling, contact heat transfer, heat transfer in production system and refrigeration transport, radiation transfer, fire protection...), and is also involved in building physics where it contributes to the design of "buildings of the 21st century" together with URGC. It develops prediction codes on building physics and aeraulics and tries to improve knowledge in buildings and their geoclimatic environment.

CETIAT, a unique technical centre specialising in aeraulics and heat transfer in France :
CETIAT offers industrial companies competences in acoustics, aeraulics, combustion, thermal sciences, thermodynamics, heat transfer for studies, tests, calibration, technology watch. Thanks to CETIAT and a network of nine labs working in closely related fields (from building physics to fluid mechanics, from catalysis to acoustics ...), la Doua can offer an all-in-one solution to industrial companies.

Technological centres :
The la Doua Science Park has test benches unique in France, and in some cases unique in Europe :

CETIAT has 50 materials test centres (heaters, ventilation, air conditioning,…) and six calibration benches, among which the national reference in calibration chain hygrometry. CETIAT is the first European centre for tests on heaters and uses the ERICA technological centre of radiating energies together with the French Institute of Textile and clothing.
CETHIL has designed MINIBAT, a tool for tests on building physics. It also uses original bench tests to characterise various thermophysical properties (emissivity, diffusivity...). CETHIL is the only lab in the world to carry out thermal diffusivity tests up to 3,000°C.
The contact mechanics lab also has a tool unique in the world : a tribometre to measure high-pressure viscosity. The lab works on very low temperature space atmospheres to test, among other things, lubricants for on-board satellites.
CASM uses original tests for notched belt power transmission (for the car industry and aeronautics).
Besides these heavy pieces of equipment, la Doua can meet all needs in terms of fine or global analysis.

Business :
La Doua-based companies in this field of study are mainly high-tech companies. They benefit from being close to the technopole's research labs. They include ACOUPHEN (a company for the study of acoustics and vibration), CADICAT (for advice and assistance on development and inovation concepts as well as applications in heat transfer).

An overview of innovations and achievements at la Doua
A partnership with Dassault System for the CAC CATIA software package CASM This simulation software package was originally designed for aeronautics but is now increasingly used in the car industry.
Braking : close collaborations with Carbone Industries LMC LMC has long collaborated with Carbone Industries, the second company for aeroplane brakes in the world and a leader in Formula 1 thanks to its active matrix carbon brakes.
CODYBA, the thermal simulation software package CETHIL CETHIL has developed a thermal simulation software package to study the inside of a building according to climate data, orientation, and habits of its occupants... The software package is used by consultants to help their clients.
ROTORINSA, software for rotor mechanics. LMst This software models the dynamic behaviour of rotors.
A multimedia book on corrosion LPCI This CD-ROM, which was developed in collaboration with university and industrial specialists, is a reference for teaching corrosion. It presents results from 20 years of research in this field.
Virtual prototyping of a range of refrigerated cabinets CETIAT With a view to reducing energy consumption of refrigerated cabinets CETIAT was comissioned by CHIEF to develop a 3D simulation software package for the fresh air curtain in a refrigerated cabinet. About ten different setups have been tested with different air distribution, rates, and speed. Once optimised, energy dispersion in the air curtain can be reduced by 12% in comparison with traditional refrigerated cabinets at even lower temperatures.

Major projects
Research Rhône-Alpes Acoustics network Creation of the Rhône-Alpes acoustics network, headed by INSA-Lyon which could gather six of INSA's labs, labs from ESCPE-Lyon, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, ENTPE, teaching hospitals and INSERM in order to group research in this field of study and enable better transfer to acoustics industries.
